1. Introduce the topic of fake sites by bringing up a fan page for a well known celebrity or issue (eg. male pregnancy) up onto the screen
- On SMART board, get each of the class to write down the first idea that comes to their head
regarding fake sites
- Brief class discussion and show of hands to see whether the students believe the site to be legitimate
or not
- In table groups, discuss the reasons why they thought the site to be real/fake and record onto a poster
paper with permanent marker. Each group will be given 10 minutes to do this and a further 5 to
discuss their opinions to the class.
2. Breach the idea of fan made sites Vs pages designed to make you believe that they are real. These are designed specifically for purposes of deliberately misleading the reader(sites pretending to be made by celebrities etc.)
- Talk on difference between harmless fake pages such as male pregnancy and fan made pages, compared
with scamming pages
- Follow with whole group discussion on the dangers of scam websites that are designed specifically to steal your identity
YOUTUBE video on how scamming via fake websites has effected peoples lives and how they are being
stopped
FACEBOOK and TWITTER - engage the students by asking how many have "liked" a certain celebrity or band etc. on facebook without even considering who is running the page.
Ask students to share ideas on why they sign up for these "likes" and if they were aware of the dangers or even if they realised that that the pages may not be what they expected.
INTRODUCE ASSIGNMENT - students are given the task of creating an advertising campaign to stress the dangers of fake websites. The assignment must be completed utilising technology in the form of blog, web based cartoon or drama, wiki, poster, play or anything else that they can put their imagination to. The assignment is a pairs assignment
